welcome to the pond

the place for all things ducks!

the duck of the day is the Common Merganser!

The Common Merganser is a large, elegant diving duck found across rivers, lakes, and forested waterways of the Northern Hemisphere. Known for its long, slender, serrated bill—perfect for catching fish it is an adept underwater hunter, often seen swimming low in the water or diving with quick precision. Males are striking with glossy green heads and crisp white bodies, while females feature a reddish brown crest and gray body. Common Mergansers nest in tree cavities and are attentive parents, leading their ducklings to water soon after they hatch. Their presence is often a sign of clean, healthy freshwater ecosystems.
